People liked him because he wasn't a politician as they saw it. But yet he's so clearly establishment. He went to Eton, Oxbridge and had been Mayor of London but didn't really stand for anything. What he understood was that there was a mood and a desire for politicians to be a bit rough around the edges. A bit more undone. Undone, provocative, arguably disrespectful and funny.
