Sri Lanka's Debt Crisis
In Cambodia, it's estimated that the average loan provided by so-called microfinance institutions has spiralled. In Jordan, thousands of women have been pursued some incarcerated for debts as little as a few hundred dollars. And in Sri Lanka, advocacy groups estimate that 200 women have been driven to suicide in recent years. Amali Wedghedra says that the system in her country is rigged against poor borrowers.
