During the cold war, his death was exploded in western anti soviet propaganda. Waltenberg was incorrectly identified as a saviour of all the jews in budapest. As a result, the rescue efforts of other agents have been marginalized or ignored. The number of people that wallenburg saved is also pretty contested.
