The History of the Mississippi River
The earthworks along the Mississippi River are all but unknown to modern Americans. The mounds were worn down by years of neglect, abused by plows and grown over in trees. Thomas Jefferson dug the bones out of a burial mound near his Virginia property. It was not until the end of the 19th century that western scholars put the mound builder myth to rest.
