The Bloody Business of Pirates
Most famous is probably Henry Everly, sometimes Avery. He's unusual as a pirate because we don't quite know the fate of Henry Everly. The battle between Avery and the Indian ship was a very bloody one. They assaulted the women on board and you really get a sense of nasty bloodthirsty people. On his way to the Indian Ocean he seized Africans, sold them into slavery,. so not a pleasant man. How much do we know about what actually happened? You draw their bloodthirsty picture and rightly emphasise the cruelty beneath these stories which have become in themselves kind of tall tales. And Michael pirate allegiances in the Mediterranean complicated indeed.
