The History of Charlemagne

On christmas day, as the king knelt before the altar in saint peter's saying his prayers during christmas mass, the sneaky pope tiptoed up behind him and placed an imperial crown on the king's head. This was the birth of the so called holy roman empire. Now most modern historians are very sceptical of this story. Many find it hard to believe that charlemagne would have let something with such huge political and cultural ramifications happen by surprise. Is possible that everything we know about the ancient and mediaeval periods comes from an elaborate forgery?
