The Importance of Private Sector Banks
Viral: Having multiple standards overall weakens the regulatory and supervision control that they have, which also impacts private sector banks. Public sector banks to do a lot of the spending and lending that the government wants to do for which this has now become the conduit. I think Raghu at one stage had made a very sensible point that you should be able to trade priority sector lending in the sense if some banks are particularly strong in lending to agriculture. Some might, but more importantly, I think they contribute to the failure to create a truly professional form of credit appraisal.
