Icarus is a global animal tracking system devised by scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany. It streams data from tiny little solar-powered tags that are attached to animals moving around the world up to a receiver on the International Space Station and then back down to Earth. The project started scientific operations last September.
As part of a massive new global tracking project, scientists are monitoring animals from a receiver on the International Space Station, mapping the incredible, previously unknown journeys that animals undertake. They’re beginning to tackle questions like how far do animals actually move? And how in the world do they know where they’re going?
