nesmith got very involved in music video production putting together his own video special elephant parts which won the first grammy for music videos. He created a tv series called pop clips which just featured music videos hosted by a video jockey or vj pop clips was shown on nickel odian and nickel odian's parent company warners decided to start an entire cable channel inspired by the format which became mtv. Given the lack of music videos available at the time mtv started showing old episodes of the monkeys the group got a new fan base and reformed without nesmith who was busy running his companies.
