The federal prison at Alcatraz was closed in 1963, and soon after it became the site of a long-term public demonstration. A group of Native Americans were led by a Lakota Sioux woman named Belva Cartier. After years of protest, an agreement was reached and many of the Native people's demands were met. In 1972, Alcatraz Island was purchased by the National Park Service and it has become a major tourist attraction.
