Judging Viewpoints by Their Fundamentals by Peter Schwartz

Ayn Rand Institute Live!

CHAPTER

Why Do People Find It Hard to Achieve the True Meaning of a Viewpoint?

People often regard some viewpoint as standing for the very opposite of its true fundamental. Most people accept the premise that man must be subordinated, but do not believe it's evil to value air conditioning and gasoline powered cars. We can understand why they might mistakenly agree with the environmentalist position against dumping toxic chemicals because they're concerned about human health. But why do such people accept environmentalist positions that clearly do not have that concern? Why don't they see the obvious difference between protecting human lives by not contaminating our drinking water on the one hand and harming them by subordinating them to the needs of turtles and fish and bugs on the other hand? It's the technique of package dealing.
