The Importance of Signs and Symbols
The book concludes really with the travel ban. And one thing that we haven't talked about is the importance of signs and symbols. I guess where that sort of myth plays out when we see things like an explicitly racist travel ban under the Trump administration. You know, Lady Liberty was a very interesting experience when writing and editing the book because I know my then PhD supervisor, but also my mentor who has now become the voice in my hand. Really what ended up happening is Emma Lazarus' small contribution to the debate on immigration hospitality had the most lasting impact.
