Is There a Degree of Realism in Virtual Reality?

i think there's quite some evidence mounting to show that that might indeed be the case, i saw in the news only a few days ago someone was trying to bring about smello vision for the millionth time. And we have been able to produce and put threely talevision in the home for something like 20 years. But the demand just simply isn't there. So i guess this brings about the question of whether a degree of realism, or fidelity in what we accept as virtual reality is, in fact goal of all these technologies.
