I think the guilt that ellie feels about the decision she made before joe's death, a, you know, that is her drive. Like that sense of self flagellation and atonement, that is what's pushing her forward. We ultimately see joel as the kind of guy who didn't go after the people who killed his daughter,. He isn't out for revenge.
