John Layton Stewart wrote to Jiang Kai-Shuk on April 18, 1947. This was quite a lengthy, 8700 word memo he wrote to the General Isamou. I'm only going to read a few excerpts of it. He describes what happened in Taipei when demonstrators marched on the Governor General's office and were dispersed by machine gun fire. The shooting was the signal for a city wide outburst of anger against all mainland Chinese regardless of rank or occupation. At no time were formosins observed to have arms and no instances of formosin use of arms were reported in Taipei. Nevertheless, the military were evidently allowed free use in what appeared to be an attempt to fright
