Sports are big business and there's a lot of money involved, but they're not really that big of a business relative to someone like the Saudi Arabian public investment fund. Last year, for instance, Newcastle United's revenue was around 220 million US dollars. That's just not very much in the scope of the larger economy. And Muhammad bin Salman is needless to say, not engaging in a protracted war via proxies in order to buy a nuts and bolts company. He is interested in being associated with something positive, something other than oil prices and human rights abuses.
