The Peloponnesian War
The Peloponnesian War began as many wars do: Large powers squabbling over a small place. Sparta saw Athens tightening its grip on the Aegean world and filling Greece's waterways with its ships, and Sparta acted. In 430 BCE, Athens allied itself with the small island of Corcyra against the forces of Corinth,. A naval battle near the mouth of the Adriatic Sea saw Athens lose narrowly.
