The Great Race Between Marsh and Coke
In 1873, both men abandoned any pretense of gentlemanly conduct with one another and just started going for broke. Marsh put a lot of his finds into a new taxonomic order and his names for most of the discoveries they stuck. Coke was on the wrong side of scientific history, amongst other things, with his neo-Lamarkist views on evolution. He's pretty roundly ignored. But by the end of 1873, even though he's pulling ahead and she in numbers, he was just digging more of them out of the ground than Marsh was.
