Thorin's Golden Shield in a Dying Fire
This is the single greatest moment of unity that we've seen in this book. I mean, even the spearmen of the elves are hearing Thorin's cry and obeying. This charge shows that his self-absorption has turned to self-sacrifice. After all the dragon sickness, all the posturing against the elves of Merkwood and the men of Dale, Thorin finally does the right thing. That really is a powerful moment.
