Isocrates and the Templete

Isocrates, significantly, gave traditional western education its literary tenor. After isocrates, though, intellectual culture became scrible. It depended on books written, words that would form an authoritative list of best works. Other expressions of culture fade away but the artifacts of culture enduring the longest come adorned with words. Sometimes a word is worth a thousand pictures. We too keep our memories. History keeps the tablets.
