The Importance of the Popular Vote
If we went to a straight up popular vote, campaigning wouldn't be expanded. You would only get campaigning in population centers where you hit a certain population density. Of all the big cities in America, how many of them very typically vote Republican? The Electoral College keeps states important to some degree.
