When James Duke of York resigned in 1673 it led to a tug of war over the religious future of the dynasty. King Charles still had no legitimate children but for whatever reason his wife Catherine of Braganza still had not had any children. So James was next in line to the throne followed then by his daughters Mary and then Anne. The king's faith and those of his heirs were very serious political matters.
