In the united states, we have this very glorified view of cowboys, s like these rough and tough, whatever guys. But really, the united states version of cowboys were actually more like the fourteenth and fifteenth century version of nights. They were murderous, drunken, raping, stealing people. And so fear drove the creation of the fda to regulate these dangerous, wildly dangerous substances.
