The Growth of Renewables in the Climate and Energy Scenarios

Recent research looked at the speed of wind and solar adoption in various countries to see if they were being deployed quickly enough to limit warming to one point, five degree c. Koord: We wanted to systematically compare the existing trends with what's depicted in the scenarios. But we quickly realize that this is way easier said done because new technologies don't have linear growth. What we actually have is that technologies follow s curves. And there's a point on every s curve where the growth stops accelerating, but has not slowed down. This point is called the inflection point. So our method was to find a way to locate that inflection point by fitting s curve models to historical data.
