Tolkien rejected the idea that his books were overly allegorical for current events of the time. Environmentalism is often essential to fantasy or science fiction storytelling pursuits. Tolkien grew up in an idyllic countryside area and then moved to Birmingham, where industry was at its height. He went from the farmlands to the smog choked like city industry city; he called it "hell on earth"
