Istanbul is a huge city, larger than many European countries in terms of its population and vast budgetary resources. Erdogan managed to tee up a weaker, less charismatic candidate who gave it a good run. It does have to do with some really fascinating messaging that came out of the Polish-German opposition campaign. I think the demographics and the institutions and the media environment deflated the message's impact.

Nora Fisher Onar is an associate professor of international studies at the University of San Francisco and author of the forthcoming book Contesting Pluralism(s): Islam, Liberalism and Nationalism in Turkey.
