The Effects of Self-Injury on Stress
Many people who self-injured do so to cope with stressful situations. This is usually backfires and thus causes more problems. Many come to view self-injury as their only way of dealing with problems. The effects of self-harm can start to wear off over time, resulting in the need for frequent or more severe injuries because they're so used to it. It also may help people avoid a negative emotion. Some people have very poor emotional intelligence. They can't express their emotions. What they do is they self-harm instead because they feel ashamed of their own emotions.
