In 1629, some guy by the name of Desvalles apparently told Cardinal Richelieu that he had discovered a new language. The French made some timid attempts to put forth French as the earth's rock but nobody was willing to buy it. Basically, any language that anyone spoke might be the real one, and somebody probably argued for it.
