How to Write an Emotional Scene
I try to think of a time when I have experienced an emotion that is at least analogous to what the character is feeling. That made writing some of the John Cleaver chapters really weird. The scene where he threatens his mom with a knife just messed me up because I was, you know, in that moment, feeling what he was running around the kitchen with a knife. It's less about trying to convey the emotion words like, he was angry. And we're about doing what these guys are talking about, which is conveying the physical reactions to those emotions.
