The Importance of Language in Philosophy
Austin thought that philosophy had gone wrong in various ways and was prone more generally to going wrong when it failed to pay attention to the niceties of ordinary language. He wanted to defend the idea that philosophical claims are invariably substantive serious claims. What Austin cared about was how difficult it can be to make serious and substantive claims when doing philosophy.
