Proteins can do all kinds of things in cells. They can be structural like everyone knows that their hair is made of as collagen, right? So we have you can use proteins to make actual structures like hair or they could play a role in your skin or whatever. Then they can also do things like help chemical reactions go faster than they would otherwise. And the really freaky thing that some proteins can do to my way of thinking as a naive person about biology is that they can turn genes on or off.
