The Genius of Thomas Sowell

CHAPTER

The Battle Between Meritocracy and Social Engineering

Are colleges casting their freshman classes for ideological appeal instead of academic excellence and preparedness? I may be wrong about this, but it seems to me there's a huge difference between casting TV commercials and admitting students to colleges. Can we as a society afford to engineer these student bodies based on anything other than intellectual excellence? Does it really matter how their photos look in the school admissions brochure? Or does it only matter how these students perform in their fields? What’s becoming painfully clear to me is that what we are really witnessing in our society is a battle between meritocracy on the one hand and social engineering on the other.
