A Fediverse user is a person who uses social media as a choice over using something like Facebook or Twitter. They're nerds primarily because they've gotten to a point where they actually understand this enough to use it. Some of them are people who are in free software free culture communities, like cultural aspects of it. And that's going to be nerds themselves - I would personally qualify those people as nerds.
