Gordon Brown went from being a stockbroker to becoming a charter market technician. He says he started his business by cold calling branch managers and waiting in the lobby for two hours at one point. The odds were fairly low that you would get hired as an advisor or co-columnist, but it was a good litmus test if you wanted to stick with it, he says.
