Software engineering is the application of empirical scientific approach to finding efficient economic solutions. We're not doing theoretical research, proving that quarks are the basis of particles or anything. For us, engineers, we are building things, and so there are always economic constraints. So I think all of these different parts of the definition kind of lead us in this direction of trying to organize our thinking in a more rational way.

Dave Farley, founder and consultant for Continuous Delivery Ltd., has been a programmer, software engineer, and systems architect since the early days of modern computing.
