The Purpose of Punishment
Foucault's focus on the idea of surveillance, I think we can link that to a lot of different things we've talked about. We need to be seen as fitting into this society, and we need to be recognized as part of the group. Foucault doesn't exactly talk about recognition per se, but I think that's what he has in mind when he's talking about our conforming with the norm. It's every time you are influenced by something, that's something exerting power over you.
