The Difference Between Ending a Short Story and a Novel
When you watch the Olympics, you want it to start right as the contestant is like the music starts and she moves. You want it to end when she hits that final, final thing. But with a novel, that is so out of proportion to the rest of the story that it feels like you have in fact stopped and you have to expand it. It's basically you've spent all of this time with these characters and you need time to come out of the world and to experience that new.
