Introduction

In her new book Skin Theory, Visual Culture and the Post-war Prison Laboratory, Christina Vesparis offers a model of an abolitionist approach to STS. During the 1960s, scientists with faculty appointments at Penn did experiments on captive men at Philadelphia's Holmesburg prison. At its core, the book asks, what is the relationship between science and the project of freedom? It hopes towards a reparative bioethics that dismantle scientific racism and the prisonation that it upholds.
