The Origins of Non-Euclidean Geometry
If we've just invented maths to help us get a bead on physical systems, then it makes a lot of sense that it's applicable. Maths doesn't seem to have developed in that kind of way and it doesn't always seem to work in that way. Even if mathematics started off as a way for us to count and measure the real world, when you start playing with it, it seems to take on a life of its own. Structures emerge in this abstract mathematical realm and if there's map unexpectedly back onto reality, it can seem startling.
