There's a tendency in down years for the losing sectors to do better in the following year. In 2022, communication services and semiconductors are outperforming their peers. It would be rather unusual to have prices up notably and earnings down. This is all true, but it's fairly rare occurrence. The winning sectors tend to underperform after big down years.
