lilian willans was born in shanghai in the 19 twenties to russian jewish parents. Like many foreigners at the time, had chased their fortunes in what was known as the paris of the east. Life for the privileged foreigners was a whirlwind of clamorous parties and social engagements. Lilian's family agreed to store some luggage for some friends who had been sent to interment camps. If they had climbed one flight, they would have seen the big suit case in which these wealthy people had put their jewelry.
