The Fate of Trinidad
On December 21, 1521, Victoria put the sea. They had 60 men on board and added a pair of pilots to help them navigate the local waters. After a stop in the Mariana Islands, the fleet went northwest. The idea was that the ship would catch favorable winds that would take them to the Americas. But it was a poor choice. Although winds never came as they anticipated, bad weather, including monsoons, fell on them. With the winds against the fleet, progress was slow and eventually scurvy set in.
