A story more so than music or background noises is more likely to force the stubborn mind's attention away from whatever is causing emotional distress. I think being able to read those kind of epic fantasy tales even as he gets to sleep allows him to get out that last bit of energy and yeah he might have just read a harrowing tale but he still gets to sleep pretty quickly.
