Is Prayer Really Necessary?

Prayer is where all our questions about prayer are littered. Is it god's will to answer every prayer? Or are there other factors involved? Why does god sometimes seem to answer some of our prayers, but only after a long, long period asking if the answer was yes? The question that iam circling around is this one, do my prayers actually matter? Do they matter to god, and do they matter in the world?
