Night Fury: The DHS's Project to Give Risk Scores to Social Media Users

DHS contracted the University of Alabama at Burningham, UAB, in 2018 to design methods of assigning a risk score to potential pro-terrorist accounts on social media. These new documents come after it was reported Customs and Border Protection, was using an AI-powered tool called Babel X to analyze traveler social media at the US border. One of the privacy threshold analysis says UAB's work will initially be focused on counter-terrorism. The researcher also plans to track threats beyond mainstream social networks like Facebook and Twitter to other communities.
