Exxon Valdez captain Joe Hazelwood was on board because of his exceptional skills as a sailor. He started drinking heavily when he went to study at an elite New York Maritime College but dropped out after two-thirds of its students dropped out. The man who would receive the bulk of the blame for the disaster has never been able to get back into work with Exxon.
