The Tensions of Jesus' Identity in the Temple
The themes of light and darkness are replete throughout the whole book of John. Some scholars interpret this verse as a reflection of the Jewish social and religious hierarchy at the time. And so in this context, the people's amazement and Jesus's knowledge and teaching may be seen as a challenge to the authority and status of the religious leaders and teachers at the times.
