The Price of Giving
In a dictator game some endowment of money is given to a person and typically the person has to allocate or divide it between herself and a complete stranger. In decision theory we actually model how people are solving this trade off by having what we call preferences. Risk preferences, time preferences, and social or distributional preferences all play a role in altruistic behavior.
