In the early 1950s, socialism is an umbrella term. It's a very crowded space underneath the umbrella because everybody claims to be a socialist. And as Salute Kaviraj says, it leads to this kind of confusion about what socialism itself means at that time. But given that socialism was so much in the air, why did it need to be legitimized?
