Aristotel thought that all the things in nature around us have, well, natures. They belong to certain kinds and what makes them to be the kind of thing they are is its own form. Now we can introduce the term form, which is one of the great terms of Aristotelian philosophy of nature. A substantial form is what makes it the thing to be of the substance that it is.
